FAWCETT (Sir William, 1728-1804, Major-General)

Finely penned document signed and inscribed by him "Approv'd by the King", being Memoranda of Leaves of Absence for three officers, Colonel Newman, Lieutenant Sutherland, and Ensign Ostman, for periods from 4 weeks to six months for health or private reasons, with their regiments and dates, headed in large letters "Most Humbly Proposed to His Majesty", 2 sides folio, title on conjugate leaf with the words "Returned from H.R.H. the Captain-General [the Duke of York] for His Majesty's Approbation"., no place, 3rd October tiny defects at edge of folds and blank bottom right corners, light remains of laying down by edge of conjugate leaf

Fawcett's long career spanned Culloden, enlisting Hessians and Brunswickers to serve against America, and the Flanders campaign of 1794-1795. He translated Marshal Saxe's memoirs and on announcing the victory of Warburg to George II in German was rewarded with a lieutenant-colonelcy.
