GLEIG (Revd. George Robert, 1796-1888, Scottish Novelist and Biographer, Chaplain General of the Forces, 1844-1875)

Autograph Letter Signed to 'My dear Tennent' (Sir James Emerson TENNENT, 1804-1869, Traveller and Politician), saying he will "readily give your protegée a chance when next I want boots either made or mended. Which will probably be when we return to town", adding that at home "I never want here repairing women", 1 side 8vo., War Office, Pall Mall, no date, c. blank side margins trimmed barely touching a few line ends

Mr. Gleig was almost the last survivor of Wellington's Peninsular Army, which he entered in 1812, serving in Spain and America. A son of the Bishop of Brechin, he was ordained in 1820 and from 1844 to 1875 was Chaplain-General of the Forces. He wrote 'The Subaltern', 1825, and other books on military history and biography including 'Warren Hastings'.
