No. 7 of 40 famous British authors. In 1930 Cronin gave up medicine for writing, and his first novel Hatter's Castle (1931) was a great success, followed by 'The Stars Look Down' (1935), 'The Citadel' (1937) and 'Doctor Finlay's Casebook'.
