GUILDFORD, SURREY

Lease for one year by James Washbourne of Leigh, Kent, to John Young, of Farnham, Surrey, of a messuage (dwelling), now divided into two, with its gardens, orchards, backsides, barn and stable, in the parish of St. Nicholas 'Guldeford' (Guildford), "at the Corner of ... Park Lane that leads from the High Street of Guldeford ... towards Guldeford Park on the East side of the said Lane", formerly occupied by Edward Draper and lately by George Cook and one Finch, which "did formerly beare the signe of the Ship and was called the old Ship", at "the Rent of One Pepper Corne" next Michaelmas "if the same shall be lawfully demanded", manuscript on vellum with engraved heading incorporating the arms of George II, 1 side 12¼" x 18½", signed and sealed by James Washbourne, witnessed on verso by William Hall and William Williams "at the Blue Posts & Rummer Charingcrosse", 30th October in fine crisp condition

Park Lane is now represented by Park Street, by St Nicholas' at the foot of Guildford High Street. Guildford Park, formerly a royal manor, was sold by Charles I and in 1709 passed to Thomas Onslow, later Lord Onslow. It lay in the angle between the North side of the Hog's Back and the river Wey, and its site, formerly 6 miles round, is now largely covered by Onslow Village.
The medieval spelling 'Guldeforde' is very late: the 'Place Names of Surrey' knows of no use after 1636.
