[GARIBALDI (Giuseppe, 1807-1882, Italian Patriot and Soldier, with Cavour and Mazzini one of the Founders of the State of Italy)]

Facsimile Autograph Letter Signed, in Italian with translation, to "dear old friend" ('Caro Vecchio'), saying that the "first copy of Labienus sent to me by Signora West has not reached me. This is what I have received", taken from the Eugène Charavay collection, Paris, and photogravured by Lefman, 3½" x 5", on a leaf from a calendar marked in French "Tuesday 12 February", the original no place, no date, c.

'The Strictures of Labienus' ('Les Propos de Labienus') were a fierce political satire against Napoleon III by Louis Auguste Rogeard. The police confiscated the first edition but a reprint soon appeared from London, and it was constantly reprinted or pirated. The original Labienus was Julius Caesar's lieutenant, who turned against his master in the Roman civil wars.
