Jules Grévy
had returned to public life in 1868 with a reputation as a quiet, shrewd republican, and was the first president of the new assembly in February 1871. He was the natural choice to succeed the conservative Marshal Mac-Mahon in 1879, but his second term was cut short by his son-in-law's use of the Elysée to traffic in appointments to the Legion d'Honneur.
Jules Ferry,
1832-1893, administered Paris during the siege of 1870, and was Prime Minister 1880-1881 & 1883-1885. He is famous for the law of 1882 which made primary education in France free, non-clerical, and obligatory. He also organised the conquest of Indo-China, 1885.
