[EDWARD VIII (1894-1972, King of Great Britain, Later the Duke of Windsor)]

Press photograph, unsigned, of the presentation to the people of Wales of the Prince of Wales following his investiture, showing him in coronet and robes between George V and Queen Mary on the balcony erected in the massive gateway, the balcony hung with armorial shields, above in the royal arms the celtic harp (for Ireland) has been specially brightly painted, 10" x 10", Caernarfon Castle, 13th July tiny defect at top left and several short closed tears in the margins, affecting only the background

A rare occasion. Edward I is said in 1284 to have promised the Welsh barons a prince who knew not a word of English. Since then this was the first time a Prince of Wales was invested in Wales, and addressed the Welsh people in their own language, as did Prince Charles in 1969.
