KARL ALEXANDER
(1818-1901, Grand Duke of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach from 1853)
LS 'Charles Alexandre' in French with translation,
thanking 'My dear Count' for his wishes, (
Count POTOCKI,
(Pototski), Polish Ambassador, the present letter being formerly with others addressed to him), thanking him for his good wishes to the Grand Duchess and himself, adding "You promise me to visit some time in March. Please believe that I will be delighted to see you", 1 side folio with conjugate blank, Weimar, 22nd April
two short closed tears in blank margins
Brought up under the eyes of Goethe, Karl Alexander continued the tradition of Weimar as the cultural centre of Germany. He brought Liszt, Richard Strauss and many others to the Court Theatre and promoted Wagner and Berlioz. His proudest achievement was completing the Wartburg at Eisenach as a monument to German history. In politics he disliked Prussian imperialism but supported the new Empire in other ways, acting, as Bismarck said, 'as the agent of good relations between Berlin and St Petersburg', and tending always to think of Germany as a whole.
