Bragge served as Secretary at War and Treasurer of the Navy, and in 1812 was Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster. A great-nephew of the 1st Earl Bathurst, he succeeded in 1804 to his uncle Poole Bathurst's estate of Lydney in Gloucestershire. He was a Cabinet Minister under Addington, whose sister Charlotte he had married.
