Signature as Duke of Clarence on envelope front, addressed to the Rev. John Merewether at Hampton (Middlesex), watermarked

The Rev. John Merewether, 1797-1850, was Queen Adelaide's private chaplain from 1824. At this time the Clarences' home was nearby Bushy Park. Merewether became Dean of Hereford in 1832 and William IV's Deputy Clerk of the Closet (private chaplain) in 1833.
