GEORGE (Duke of Cambridge, 1819-1904, Grandson of George III, Commander in Chief of the Army)

Autograph letter signed to Lady ROSSLYN  (Blanche, 1839-1933, mother by her first marriage of 'darling Daisy', [Frances, Countess of Warwick, mistress of Edward VII]), saying "I did not like to intrude myself upon you in the first moments of your great grief & sorrow but your dear son will I hope have told you how much I feel for & with you. Your dear husband", James, (4th Earl of Rosslyn, 1833-1890, who had died on the 3rd), "was always very ... considerate to me, and I looked upon him as a very sincere and valued friend ... You have seen so much of his intense suffering, that no doubt you will think with me, that for him this release is a happy one, but the loss for you & his family & friends is none the less painful", 2 sides 7" x 4½", Wortley Hall, Sheffield, (the home of the Earl of Wharncliffe), 10th September

The Rosslyns were close friends of the Queen and the Royal Family. Miss Blanche Maynard, Lady Rosslyn's other daughter by her first marriage, married Prince George's ADC, Lord Algy Gordon-Lennox.
