FRANCIS (1st Duke of Teck, 1837-1900, father of Queen Mary)

Autograph Letter Signed to 'Dear Gino', saying "I cannot tell how terribly we felt your dear Sister's death ... What a shock ... we can well measure by what it was to us", recalling seeing her "once more, at Cannes ... It was most kind & good of you, to have at once thought of us, her true friends ... We return to England on the 2d. of July, our long stay on the Continent ... has done our Daughter a World of good", and sending "my kindest regards to Mrs Light and my love, to the I Cedri", embossed crowned 'FT', 4 sides 8vo black edged, Ludwigsburg, Württemberg, 21st June closed tears in horizontal folds without loss

The Tecks had gone to Cannes in March, following the death on 14th January of Princess May's fiancé the Duke of Clarence. The Wales family were likewise staying at Cap Martin, giving Princess May a chance to see Clarence's brother Prince George, (George V), whom she married on 6th July 1893.
In 1883, told off to economise by living abroad, the Tecks had gone to Florence, arriving in December. After a while they were lent I Cedri, a fifteenth century villa a few miles down the Arno, by Miss Bianca Light, where they stayed, rent-free, from 3rd April 1884 to 24th May 1885. The Duke had become great friends with her brother, Major Light, who was President of the English Club in Florence. For Princess May it had been a wonderful education, meeting connoisseurs, drawing, visiting art treasures and going to the theatre
