GLADSTONE (William Ewart, 1809-1898, Prime Minister)

Autograph postcard signed to John Richardson Selwyn (1844-1898, Bishop of Melanesia, 1877-1890), Selwyn College, Cambridge, thanking him "for the very interesting tract. There is a striking notice of the Great Bishop in a small volume just published 'Bearers of the Lamp of Grace'. We heartily trust you are well", 2 sides 4¾" x 3", no place, postmarked Chester Station, 16th November

J.R. Selwyn was born in New Zealand where his father, George Augustus Selwyn, 1809-1878, was the first Bishop, 1841-1868. He established a College on Norfolk Island, using the mission schooner 'Southern Cross' to bring islanders there for short periods. Rheumatism caused the present visit to England. In 1893 he became Master of Selwyn, Cambridge, which had been erected by public subscription as a memorial to his father.
