Long Autograph letter signed, in English, to Miss Patteson, sister of John Coleridge Patteson, (1827-1871, first Bishop of Melanesia), talking of her "surprise and delight" at "your kind remembrance" especially as she still laments "my missing you here in Switzerland two years ago", till she heard from Fanny Davies she "had an uneasy feeling of having lost sight of you", the "paper-poignard ... recalls ... the New Zealand weapons, decorating ... your ... conservatory in Torquay ... that ... September day many years ago ... I saw the gorgeous ... Australian bird come at your bidding ... you told me of your little nephew laying the foundation stone of a church near your house", talking also of friend Sophy in England, "So do come to the Ried and tell me about Sophy and your dear self next summer", Ried, near Interlaken, 4 sides 6¾" x 5", 3rd October tiny defect at blank top of fold

John Coleridge Patteson, 1827-1871, joined Selwyn in New Zealand and in 1861 was consecrated the first Bishop of Melanesia. He spoke twenty three languages with ease. He was killed when natives mistook him for one of the traders who were impersonating missionaries, in order to kidnap labour for Fiji and Queensland.
