TEMPLE (Frederick, 1821-1902, from 1896 Archbishop of Canterbury, crowned Edward VII)

Autograph letter signed as Bishop of London, in his vigorous hand, to John Richardson SELWYN, (1844-1898, Patteson's successor as Bishop of Melanesia, 1877-1892), saying "Is it possible to see you for a very short time before you leave England? I have been putting the matter off in order to get final answer from the Colonial Office about Fiji", and listing his appointments at "the Bounty Board, Dean's Yard" and at the "Ecclesiastical Commission, 10 Whitehall Place", during which he can "see you at any time ... if you send in your card ... This morning I was misdirected and failed to find you", ending "Yours ever", 4 sides 7" x 4½", Fulham Palace, 15th January

J.R. Selwyn was born in New Zealand where his father, George Augustus Selwyn, 1809-1878, was the first Bishop, 1841-1868. He established a College on Norfolk Island, using the mission schooner 'Southern Cross' to bring islanders there for short periods. Rheumatism caused the present visit to England. In 1893 he became Master of Selwyn, Cambridge, which had been erected by public subscription as a memorial to his father.
