NASH (John, 1893-1977, R.A., Painter, War Artist, Illustrator and Engraver)

Autograph Letter Signed to Anthony BERTRAM (1897-1978, writer on Art and Travel, biographer, 1955, of John Nash's brother Paul, 1889-1946), saying he has "just unearthed 2 more letters of Pauls ... rich in marginal drawings ... one ... from the Dymchurch period ... the other ... headed Fitzroy St. ... about the designs made for Leeds Town Hall", in the first "the drawing of the rescue of the sheep is splendid & the horned characture [sic] of Christine [John's wife] & myself ... please keep them carefully & let me have them back some time", 1 side 8vo., Bottengoms Farm, Wormingford, Essex, 20th February

Anthony Bertram was in the Infantry in WW1 and in MI6 during WW2. As early as 1923 he had written a short life of Paul for the series 'Contemporary British Artists' and was now starting a full length biography. He and his wife Barbara, 1906-2004 [not John's sister], married in 1929, and leased Bignor Manor, near Petworth. There in WW2 Barbara was housemother to resistance fighters on their way back to France.
