NASH (John, 1893-1977, R.A., Painter, War Artist, Illustrator and Engraver)

Autograph Letter Signed to Anthony BERTRAM (1897-1978, writer on Art and Travel, biographer, 1955, of John Nash's brother Paul, 1889-1946), saying he has "been sustaining some pretty heavy shooting from [106] Banbury Road", (Oxford, Paul & his wife Margaret's home, where Margaret still lived) "on the subject of the book & a few ranging shots of lighter calibre ... from [their sister] Barbara" but as "you sound rather happier about the matter ... [I] retired behind my emplacements" being at "the crucial stage of preparation for my show ... framing, selection etc. I think I must see Margaret who offers to dash up to London & will then meet you for lunch afterwards", suggesting the 27th "at the RCA Common Room", with Stop Press, "Margaret ... unwell ... suggests the following week". 2 sides 8vo., Bottengoms Farm, Wormingford, Essex, 20th January no year but

Anthony Bertram was in the Infantry in WW1 and in MI6 during WW2. As early as 1923 he had written a short life of Paul for the series 'Contemporary British Artists' and was now starting a full length biography. He and his wife Barbara, 1906-2004 [not John's sister], married in 1929, and leased Bignor Manor, near Petworth. There in WW2 Barbara was housemother to resistance fighters on their way back to France.
