NASH (John, 1893-1977, R.A., Painter, War Artist, Illustrator and Engraver)

Autograph Letter Signed to Anthony BERTRAM (1897-1978, writer on Art and Travel, biographer, 1955, of John Nash's brother Paul, 1889-1946), saying "Dear Tony. Stop Press ... it will have to be Feb 3rd for our lunch & I shall see her", (Paul Nash's widow Margaret, who was still living in Oxford), "the evening before. She wants to see me before I see you!", 1 side 8vo., Bottengoms Farm, Wormingford, Essex, 21st January no year but

Anthony Bertram was in the Infantry in WW1 and in MI6 during WW2. As early as 1923 he had written a short life of Paul for the series 'Contemporary British Artists' and was now starting a full length biography. He and his wife Barbara, 1906-2004 [not John's sister], married in 1929, and leased Bignor Manor, near Petworth. There in WW2 Barbara was housemother to resistance fighters on their way back to France.
Margaret had sent criticisms to John of Bertram's drafts, and wanted to discuss them with John before John and Bertram met in London at the RCA Common Room.
