[MARGARET
(Princess, 1913-1997, née Campbell-Geddes, wife, 1937, of Prince Ludwig (V), last head of the house of Hesse & By Rhine, and their adopted daughter
JOHANNA
(Princess, 1936-1939, daughter of her husband's brother Georg Donatus, 1906-1937, Hereditary Grand Duke, and his wife, 1931, Cecilie, 1911-1937, Princess of Greece, sister of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh)]
Fine unsigned Portrait Postcard Photograph, by Brockmeyer
of Darmstadt, showing them head and shoulders, full or three quarter face, Princess Margaret looking down with an affectionate gaze at Princess Johanna whom she holds in her lap, no place, no date, circa
Tragically, the rest of Johanna's family died flying to her uncle Ludwig's wedding in London. He and Princess Margaret adopted their niece, but she too died young.
Princess Margaret continued the Hesse family's tradition as patrons of the arts. She made Wolfsgarten near Darmstadt an oasis of calm during WWII and at the end of the war was an immense help to her people by her contacts with the Allies.
