In July 1824 Canning, then Foreign Secretary, appointed Howard de Walden his Under Secretary of State, and in January 1826 sent him to Brazil with Lord Stuart de Rothesay, who was negotiating its independence. He later held the difficult post of Ambassador to Lisbon during the civil wars, and was then at Brussels for 22 years.
