Autograph Letter Signed to Miss Patteson, sister of John Coleridge Patteson, (1827-1871, first Bishop of Melanesia), thanking her "for the photograph" of her brother, "I can with some effort recognise the features, but I confess I wish to retain in my memory the more cheerful and hopeful expression of his Oxford days", (at Balliol, 1845-1848), "I wish I could tell you how deeply I feel for you, and how I admire the spirit with which you bear your irreparable loss, but words fail me ...", 2 sides 8vo., black edged, Parks End, Oxford, 13th April a few small light marks

In March 1855 Patteson went out with George Augustus Selwyn, first Bishop of New Zealand, and in 1861 was consecrated the first Bishop of Melanesia. He spoke twenty three languages with ease. He was killed when natives mistook him for one of the traders who were impersonating missionaries, in order to kidnap labour for Fiji and Queensland.
