[EDWARD VII (1841-1910, King of Great Britain)

Commission document with printed signature at the head 'Edward R & I', appointing Alfred Francis Gerald Ruston as 2nd Lieutenant in the Territorial Force, printed in a handsome italic type with manuscript additions, enjoining him "to exercise and well discipline in Arms ... the inferior Officers and Men serving under you ...", good papered seal with the King's title and arms, countersigned also by Major General Sir Charles Frederic HADDEN, (1854-1924, Master General of the Ordnance), 1 side 12" x 16" folding to 12" x 4", short title on verso, Court at St. James's, 16th December

The Territorial Force was formed on 1st April 1908 by combining the existing Militia and Volunteer units. The short title names Ruston as attached to 'Chatham (C) Company (Works) Kent Fortress Companies, Royal Engineers', on 18th December 1908. Later, as Lieutenant, he was attached to the Submarine Mining School at Gillingham, as Captain he commanded No. 1 Works Company at Tonbridge, and as Major in 1915 survived the sinking of HMS Hythe, which was attempting to land Kent engineers in the Dardanelles.
