[VICTORIA (1819-1901, Queen of Great Britain), JOHN BROWN (1826-1883, her Highland Servant) and Princess HELENA (1846-1923, wife of Prince Christian of Schleswig-Holstein, 3rd Daughter of Queen Victoria)]

Striking unsigned Carte-de-visite Portrait Photograph, by W & D Downey, showing her mounted side-saddle, full length, in near profile, in hat and crinoline skirt, Brown full face, full length in highland dress, holding the horse's bridle, with below Princess Helena in profile, kneeling facing her attentive dog, 3½" x 2½", no place, no date but Osborne, Isle of Wight,

When the Queen went into mourning in 1861, fears were entertained for her health, and to give her exercise, John Brown and her favourite pony were brought down from Balmoral. While she had no one now to call her 'Victoria', John Brown, who at least addressed her at times as 'Wumman', was the nearest thing. After his mother's death, Edward VII ordered all mementoes of Brown at Osborne to be destroyed.
