[TROCHU (Louis Jules, 1815-1896, French General and politician, President of the Government of National Defence, 4th September 1870 - 22nd January 1871 and Head of State)]

Unsigned Carte-de-visite Portrait Photograph, by the London Stereoscopic & Photographic Company, titled 'Governor of Paris', showing him head and shoulders, three quarter face, in full dress military uniform, 3¼" x 2¼" oval in margins 4" x 2½", no place, no date, circa neat early identification across top of blank background

In August 1870, just after war had broken out with Prussia, Napoleon III put Trochu, who had been closely involved in the re-armament since 1866, in charge of the defence of Paris. After the disaster at Sedan and the proclamation of the Republic, Trochu showed himself a master of passive defence, but when capitulation became inevitable resigned the governorship, retaining the presidency till after the armistice in February 1871.
