Beaumont was of the West Point class of 1861, which asked to graduate early in order to join the army. He enlisted into the First Cavalry and served all through the war, rising to brevet Colonel in 1865. Beaumont was awarded the Medal of Honor for the successful attack on 17th December 1864 at Harpeth River, Tennessee, and for charging on 2nd April 1865 at the head of his regiment into the second and last line of the Confederate army's works at Selma, Alabama. After the war he reverted to Captain, (Major, 1879), serving in the Indian Wars in Texas and the South West. At the time of this photograph he was Instructor of Cavalry at West Point (1875-1879). In 1879 he returned to active service.
G.W. Pach was also a regular photographer at Harvard, Yale, Vassar and other universities, the processing and printing being done in New York.
