Brett graduated in 1879 into the 2nd U.S. Cavalry. In 1880 he led a party of ten soldiers to recover a herd of ponies, captured by the Sioux at the head of O'Fallon's Creek, Montana. They retrieved them and separated the Indians from their own horses, but the fight continued in thick trees till nightfall. Brett displayed 'fearless exposure and dashing bravery'. From 1910-1916 Brett was superintendant of Yellowstone National Park. In September 1917 he was put in command of the 160th Infantry Brigade, and served in Europe between May 1918 and June 1919, commanding the 80th Infanty Division, for which he received the Croix de Guerre, the Legion of Honour, and the U.S. Army Distinguished Service Medal.
G.W. Pach was also a regular photographer at Harvard, Yale, Vassar and other universities, the processing and printing being done in New York.
