Schofield, commissioned into the 1st Light Artillery in 1855 after previous service, held important posts all through the Civil War, initially in Missouri where he was appointed Brigadier-General of Volunteers in 1861. He was awarded the Medal of Honor as 'conspicuously gallant in leading a regiment' when charging against the Confederate forces at Wilson's Creek, Missouri. Commanding the XXIII Corps from February 1864, he took part in Sherman's Atlanta campaign, joining up with Sherman at Goldsboro on 23rd March 1865. After the war he commanded several Departments successively, and made the recommendations that led to the acquisition of Pearl Harbor as a naval base.
G.W. Pach was also a regular photographer at Harvard, Yale, Vassar and other universities, the processing and printing being done in New York.
