HORSFORD (Sir Alfred Hastings, 1818-1885, General, Military Secretary 1874-1880)

Autograph Lettert Signed to 'My dear Prothero', recalling "our former days", and asking "are you still anxious to have one or both of my red setters", explaining that "In Camp they become too much of the Barrack dog" and since "they are both affectionate ... I give you the refusal ... They are very handsome & had they only fallen into good hands, wd. have been invaluable as they are perfectly indefatigable but now as wild as hawks - This I tell you, that you may not imagine they are broken in", 4 sides 8vo., North Camp, Aldershot, 6th September no year, circa neat typed identification in blank top margin and a few original blots from pen scratches on side 1, faint blank impress of a paper clip in top margins

Horsford, commissioned into the Rifle Brigade, served in the Cape, 1847, the 8th Xhosa War, 1852, and the Crimea, and commanded the 6th Brigade at the capture of Lucknow, 1858. This letter was written while he was a Brigade Commander at Aldershot, 1866-1869.
