(Frederick, Earl, 1832-1914, V.C., K.G., 'Roberts of Kandahar', Field Marshal)]
Unsigned Cabinet Portrait Photograph, by Elliott & Fry,
showing him seated, nearly three quarter length, almost full face, in Field Marshal's uniform, resting his plumed hat on his right knee, his other hand on his sword, and wearing his medals and decorations including the V.C. and the Star of the Order of the Bath (1880), titled on the verso 'Souvenir of South Africa, 1899-1900', published by J. Stembridge, London, E.C., 6½" x 4¼", no place, no date, circa
Roberts was awarded the V.C. in January 1858 at Khudaganj for saving the life of a sepoy and capturing a rebel standard. In December 1899, when he was 67, Roberts, who had been working on a strategy for South Africa since 1897, offered his services to the Government. He returned in early 1901 as the hero who had retrieved the situation there, was rewarded with the Garter and an Earldom, and took up the post of Commander-in-Chief.
