Roberts was awarded the V.C. in January 1858 at Khudaganj for saving the life of a sepoy and capturing a rebel standard. In December 1899, when he was 67, Roberts, who had been working on a strategy for South Africa since 1897, offered his services to the Government. He returned in early 1901 as the hero who had retrieved the situation there, was rewarded with the Garter and an Earldom, and took up the post of Commander-in-Chief.
