[FRIEDRICH III (Wilhelm Nikolaus, 1831-1888, son-in-law of Queen Victoria, in 1888 Emperor of Germany for 99 days)]

Unsigned carte-de-visite sized Portrait Photograph, showing him head and shoulders, three quarter face, in military uniform with decorations, his eyes with a firm gaze to the left of the image, his chin shaved but already with very full side whiskers and strong moustache, laid down on white paper bearing 'Crown Prince of Prussia' in a neat contemporary hand, 3½" x 2¼", no place, no date, circa

Pictures of Friedrich III are uncommon due to his early death from throat cancer. He only survived his father Wilhelm I by three months. As Crown Prince his position was made very difficult by his opposition to Bismarck and also as his wife Victoria, Empress Frederick antagonised the Prussian people with her aggressive & tactless Englishness.
