Signature 'Sussex' on Autograph envelope front to Sir John Hayford Thorold, (1773-1831, from 1815 10th Bart., Bibliophile) at Syston House, Grantham, 3" x 5", London, 26th January a few original smears from pressing the pen (as usual with the Duke) but his signature is clear

Sir John continued his father's collecting and built a new library at Syston Park, according to Dibdin 'one of the most splendid ... in Europe'. He acquired a 1459 Psalter on vellum for £4950, at that time the most expensive volume ever sold.
