DERBY (14th Earl of, Edward Stanley, 1799-1869, Prime Minister)

Autograph Letter Signed to 'Dear Henry', (Lord Henry Lennox, 1821-1886, third son of the 5th Duke of Richmond, M.P. for Chichester, 1846-1885, holding minor offices), hoping to see him "as usual at Knowsley for the Liverpool Races on Tuesday the 8th of next month? I am sorry ... Boo cannot be of the party", 1 side 8vo., St. James's Square, 13th June no year, circa

Lord Derby considered Lord Henry 'by far the cleverest of the family'. 'Boo' is Henry's brother Lord Alexander, (1825-1892, M.P.), who aspired to be Lord Derby's Parliamentary Private Secretary. Lord Derby had two objections: they would not be in the same House and their shared love of racing would take them away from Parliament at the same time.
