Autograph Letter Signed, with transcription, to Lady Westmoreland, (Jane, d. 1857, née Hicks-Saunders, 2nd wife, 1800, of John Fane, 10th Earl of Westmoreland, 1759-1841), saying he has received her message that she "wished for a letter to an Hanoverian Envoy at Rome, as there was no English Diplomatist there", he has "lost no time in obeying Your Command and enclose You a letter [not present] for the Hanoverian Charge d'Affaire [sic] Monsieur Kestner", (August, 1777-1853, art lover and collector of antiquities), adding "should I not have the pleasure of seeing You previous to Your Departure which I shall very much regret ... I wish you all Happiness & Health", 1 side 8vo., Kew, 23rd October

From 1534 England had had no diplomatic relations with the Holy See, although many had visited on the Grand Tour. In fact in 1832 there was a tentative beginning by sending an unofficial resident, progessing by stages to Ambassador in 1982.
