[TERRISS (William Charles James, originally Lewin, 1847-1897, Actor, father of Ellaline)]

Unsigned Portrait Cabinet Photo, by W & D Downey, showing him three quarter length, three quarter face, as "William" in Douglas Jerrold's 'Black-Eyed Susan', and wearing nautical uniform, with a proud and manly but casual look, 6½" x 4¼", no place, dated on the verso tiny bump in one corner

William Terriss had a penchant for nautical melodrama. As a young man he was mistaken for midshipman Prince Alfred. Later he spent 5 months in the Falklands (where Ellaline was born in 1871), and was elected captain by the crew of the homeward ship, a whaler, when they mutinied.
