BUTLER (Agnata Frances, née Ramsay, 1867-1931, Classical Scholar, second wife, 1888, of Henry Montagu Butler, 1833-1918, from 1886 Master of Trinity, Cambridge)

Autograph Letter Signed, to Miss Patteson, sister of John Coleridge Patteson, (1827-1871, first Bishop of Melanesia, martyr), she is "looking forward very much to seeing you and the Coleridge party next Saturday" and hopes "you will not choose a later time than the 4.32 from Liverpool street. If ... earlier ... so much the better", the "cold & gloomy" weather is "a great contrast ... to Mürren when we saw you last" and hoping for "bright days while you are here", 3 sides 8vo., Trinity Lodge, Cambridge, 23rd October

Agnata Ramsay was placed in division one of the First Class in the Classical Tripos in 1887, unequalled by any man that year. If women had been allowed to take degrees, she would have been senior classic, the same distinction as her husband. The present letter shows her quickly settled as hostess at Trinity for thirty years. The Coleridges will be cousins of Miss Patteson, whose mother Frances Coleridge was a great-niece of the poet.
