RUSSELL
(Lord John, 1st Earl, 1792-1878, K.G., Reformer, Prime Minister)
Fine Autograph Note, Signed on the address panel,
to "the Office Keeper Home Office", asking for "Two books on my table at the Home Office ... the English Poor Law Report ... Extracts from Irish Poor Evidence - to be put up in paper & sent to me", 1 side 4to and conjugate address leaf, Wilton Crescent, 21st December
crisp
In April 1835 Lord John had secured the resignation of Peel and the re-instatement of Melbourne. He chose the Home Office, which meant responsibility for Ireland, of whose misery he was well aware, most recently from a visit in 1833. This note shows him, over Christmas, preparing for his Irish Poor Law Bill. On coming into office he had married Adelaide, Lady Ribblesdale, (1807-1838), a young widow, and 30 Wilton Crescent was their new home.
