An uncommon Waterloo signature. Byng was promoted to Brigadier-General in 1811 and fought in the Peninsular War under General Hill right up to Toulouse. During the Battle of Waterloo he led the 2nd brigade of Guards in the 1st Division under Cooke, where he was prominent in the defence of Hougoumont. On the march to Paris that followed he took Péronne and occupied the heights of Montmartre. KCB in 1815, he twice received the thanks of Parliament for his services.
