EDWARD VII (1841-1910, King of Great Britain)

Commission document with printed signature at the head 'Edward R & I', appointing Hugh FitzJohn Simpson (1881-1914) as 2nd Lieutenant in "Our Land Forces ... or in such higher rank ... from time to time ... of which a notification will be made in the London Gazette", printed in a handsome italic type with manuscript additions, enjoining him "to exercise and well discipline in Arms ... the inferior Officers and Men serving under you ...", good papered seal still bearing Queen Victoria's title and arms, signed also by St. John Brodrick (1856-1942, introduced the 'Brodrick' forage cap, from 1907 9th Viscount Midleton, from 1920 1st Earl of Midleton) as Secretary of State for War, 1900-1903, 1 side 12" x 15¾", short title on verso, Court at St. James's, 3rd May former folds neatly strengthened on verso, last line of title on verso covered but can be made out

In 1914 Simpson was in the 21st Battalion, London Regiment (Territorial), which was mobilised, but he died while the battalion was still in England.
