Known as the 'Red Prince' from his favourite hussar uniform, Friedrich Karl held important commands in the wars against Denmark, Austria and France, for example besieging and taking the surrender of Metz in 1870, and was one of the chief architects of victory. His daughter Louise Margarete married Queen Victoria's son, Arthur, Duke of Connaught.
