[ISABEL II (1830-1904, Queen of Spain, 1833-1868)]

Unsigned Carte-de-visite Portrait Photograph, by Charles Clifford (1819-1863), of Madrid, an impressive image showing her full length, three quarter face to the viewer, crowned and with a firm gaze, in a magnificent dark embroidered crinoline dress overlaid with fine lace, and a fan in her right hand, 4" x 2½", no place, no date, circa

Charles Clifford, from Wales, was a pioneer photographer in Spain and became one of her greatest in the 19th century. He liked to promote Spain to English eyes as also ruled by a woman, and accompanied Queen Isabel on tours round the country.
Although Queen Isabel was officially a constitutional monarch, and progress was achieved in several areas, civil war marked the first seven years of her reign. Progressives were excluded from Government by the other two parties till eventually she was deposed in 1868 and a republic proclaimed. She abdicated formally in 1870 and made her home in Paris.
