GALSWORTHY (John, 1867-1933, Author of 'The Forsyte Saga', Winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature)

Fine Autograph Letter Signed to "My dear Storrs", (Sir Ronald Henry Amherst, 1881-1955, Near Eastern Expert and Governor), saying "we returned from our camping with Embarak, yesterday. At once I want to thank you for making him known to us", he was "the greatest fun ... no hitches", they are "much fitter" than they started, they will "try & drop cards at the Agency this afternoon", as they catch the early train next day for "Alexandria and Syracuse", but send "most cordial thanks for having provided the cream of the whole show", Mena House [Hotel, the Pyramids, Egypt], 11th February

Galsworthy and his wife Ada loved travelling, from the time they were first together, before Ada's divorce from John's cousin. In 1913, John had been endlessly on the move, overseeing productions of his plays in England and Austria. On 18th December they set out for a long winter holiday, nursing heavy colds, in search of sunshine, their first and only visit to Egypt. At Marseilles they fell in by chance with H.W. Massingham (editor of The Nation) and his wife. The four went as far as Luxor, and on the way back made the present camping expedition into the desert. They were accompanied by 12 Arabs and a mass of baggage and furniture loaded on to two camels, and were entertained at one point by an Egyptian dancing girl. After a fortnight in Sicily they left for England, travelling slowly via Genoa and Paris.
At this time Storrs was Oriental Secretary at the British Agency under Sir Eldon Gorst, and a powerful influence on British relations with the countries of the Middle East.
