Pair of Signed Portrait Photographs, by Giovanni Ambrosetti of Turin, showing them three quarter face, head and shoulders, the new Duchess in an elegant dress with appliqué work, square neckline, choker, seven rows of pearls, contrasting with light coloured embroidered sleeves, signed below 'Isabella di Baviera Duchessa di Genova', the Prince in Naval uniform, signed below 'Tomaso di Savoia', each 5" x 3¾" oval in the photographer's 'Turin Format' and his hinged oval dark red leather case, 6¼" x 4¾", bearing the crowned arms of Savoy and Bavaria, 'Ricordo' and the date, no place, for 3rd May upper cover rubbed in parts of armorials

Prince Tommaso was brought up by the king his uncle, who supervised his education. He spent time as a pupil of Matthew Arnold and at Harrow, was an expert on naval monoeuvres and sailed round the world. The couple married in Munich on 14th April 1883. On their return, there were great celebrations in Rome (3rd May 1883), including the first of the famous 'Carrousel of the Carabinieri', in the Piazza di Siena. This was a display of horsemanship, recreating the Charge of Pastrengo, 3rd May 1848, during the First War of Independence. It was revived in 1933, and has become the close of the International Horse Festival held in the Piazza, a huge area within the Villa Borghese.
