ALICE (Maud Mary, 1843-1878, Princess, Daughter of Queen Victoria, wife, 1862, of Ludwig IV, Grand Duke of Hesse & mother of Alexandra Feodorovna)

Remarkable Pencil Drawing, signed with her monogram and titled by her, of her young brother Prince ARTHUR (1850-1942, Duke of Connaught, Governor General of Canada, ADC to every monarch from Victoria to George VI), showing him full length, full face, in uniform including his bearskin cap, striking his drum, by a tall tree and with a flock of birds in the distant sky, drawn with vigorous shading, a lovely picture which has caught his firm military gaze, on paper 9¼" x 7", no place, no date, circa a few very light brown marks in bottom left corner

In 1859 Alice organised a celebration for her parents, and wrote to her governess, Mme Rollande, "We also played a quintett together, Helena, Louise and myself on the piano, Arthur on the drum, and Leopold on the triangle". Arthur shared a birthday with his godfather, the Duke of Wellington, and adored acting as a soldier.
