Princess LOUISE
(1848-1939, Duchess of Argyll, Sculptress)]
Attractive unsigned Carte-de-visite Portrait Photograph, by Mayall,
showing them full length in matching dark crinoline dresses, three quarter face, Princess Helena stands in three quarter profile, with her left hand on the shoulder of her sister, who is seated with a book on her lap, but with a faraway gaze, at the foot and on the backstamp are the publisher's name J. Gurney & Son of 707 Broadway, New York, 4" x 2½", no place, dated in the image 27th July
Photographer Jeremiah Gurney (1812-1886) opened in 1840 at 707 Broadway the first American photo gallery, using the Daguerrotype process with great artistic skill. In 1860 he photographed the Prince of Wales for a carte-de-visite during the Prince's tour of Canada and the United States, and this may well be an imported companion piece. The verso bears a contemporary U.S. Inland Revenue stamp, cancelled, for 2 cents.
