THE ALBANY FAMILY HÉLÈNE (of Waldeck & Pyrmont, 1861-1922, Princess, wife of Leopold, 1st Duke of Albany), her son CARL EDUARD (George Albert, 1884-1954, Duke of Saxe-Coburg & Gotha, 1900-1918, 2nd Duke of Albany until 1919 when he was stripped of his British titles), with his wife, 1905, VIKTORIA ADELHEID (1885-1970, eldest daughter of Friedrich Ferdinand, Duke of Schleswig Holstein Sonderburg Glücksburg), and their eldest son JOHANN LEOPOLD (1906-1972, Hereditary Prince of Saxe-Coburg & Gotha), the Duchess of Albany's sister ALICE (Princess, Countess of Athlone, 1883-1981), and brother-in-law ATHLONE (Earl of, Prince Alexander of Teck, 1874-1957, Queen Mary's Brother) and their daughter MAY (Princess of Teck, 1906-1994, Lady May Cambridge, wife, 1931, of Sir Henry Abel Smith)]

Fine Unsigned Postcard Portrait Photograph, by Vandyk, showing the Duchess with her gentle smile seated and surrounded by her family, in two rows, nearly full length, three quarter to full face, on her right is Princess Alice with Princess May in a fine child's dress on her lap, on her left the (future) Earl of Athlone, standing behind are the Coburgs, with Prince Johann Leopold in his mother's arms, and Duke Carl Eduard on the right, published by J. Beagles & Co., 5½" x 3½", no place, no date, circa tiny surface flaw touching Prince Johann Leopold's left cheek, otherwise excellent

When the Duke of Edinburgh and Saxe-Coburg & Gotha's son died in 1899, the Duke's brother the Duke of Connaught refused the succession, and their nephew Charles Edward of Albany, aged 15, was removed from Eton to take his place, succeeding a year later. Here he is, happy with his family, before the war of 1914 forced him to choose between England and Germany.
