The Duchess went out with her husband as Vicereine but returned to Italy on the outbreak of war. Before the war he had worked with his uncle Luigi, Duke of the Abruzzi, on model farming, earning the respect of Haile Selassie. Her husband was finally captured in 1941 and made a prisoner of war in Kenya. A fine pilot, he was allowed to take the controls for a few moments on the way to captivity, where he died after contracting malaria and tuberculosis.
