AOSTA (Anna, 1906-1986, daughter of Prince Jean, Duc de Guise, Head of the Royal House of France, and wife, 1927, of her first cousin Amedeo, 3rd Duke of Aosta, 1898-1942, Governor-General of Italian East Africa and Viceroy of Abyssinia, 1937-1941)

Splendid Signed and Dated Portrait Photograph, by Petri of Milan, showing her head and neck, full face, with a beautiful tiara, signed by her in Italian "Anne of France, Dowager Duchess of Aosta", 9¼" x 7", in a fine silver-fronted frame 9½" x 11¾", no place,

The Duchess went out with her husband as Vicereine but returned to Italy on the outbreak of war. Before the war he had worked with his uncle Luigi, Duke of the Abruzzi, on model farming, earning the respect of Haile Selassie. Her husband was finally captured in 1941 and made a prisoner of war in Kenya. A fine pilot, he was allowed to take the controls for a few moments on the way to captivity, where he died after contracting malaria and tuberculosis.
