[VICTORIA (1819-1901, Queen of Great Britain)]

White Cotton Printed Cloth Souvenir headed "Jubilee of Queen Victoria" with good images, head and shoulders, of the Queen surrounded by the Prince and Princess of Wales and the Queen's other sons and daughters, in the corners are her nine Prime Ministers from Melbourne to Salisbury with their dates, down the centre are scenes from her life - her head at the age of ten, kneeling to be crowned, visiting a highland cottage, and, at the foot, 'The Secret of England's Greatness', showing her as a young Queen with an Ambassador in native dress from East Africa who stands to receive the Bible, two of her ministers in the background, printed in black, 23" x 24", no place, a few spots on or near the Queen's left side without detracting from the image

The last scene reflects a popular anecdote of the 1850s that Queen Victoria so responded when asked what the secret was. It has not been verified but has some parallels with other actions of hers. The governor of Mombasa was at her coronation in 1838 and returned in 1842. A better known variant, by Thomas Jones Baker, circa 1863, shows the ambassador kneeling.
