[OLGA ALEXANDROVNA (1882-1960, younger daughter of Alexander III, and her 2nd husband Colonel of Cavalry Nikolai KULIKOVSKY (1881-1958)]

Early Wartime Issue of the Danish Magazine Billed-Bladet ('The Picture Paper'), where the main feature is their Silver Wedding Anniversary (splendid cover photo and pp. 18-25), with many fine photographs, including those taken on Olga's wedding day in Kiev, 17th November 1916, as a nurse with Nicholas II at a wounded soldier's bedside, the couple with their young sons, 1923, after they reached Denmark, their farm 'Knudsminde' at Ballerup south of Copenhagen, their simple silver wedding dinner, the Grand Duchess linking arms with her two sons in Danish uniform, her painting in the open, many of her paintings are on the walls in the other photos, and her devoted maid Emilie Tenzov, altogether a fascinating record of this time, other features show American film stars with their dogs, Prince Carl Johan studying at the military academy in Sweden, Paris at Night - 41 (high life in spite of the war, with a picture of Colette), American college girls and their sweaters, fashionable party games, the latest films, and the jazz scene, 32 sides 14½" x 10½", Copenhagen, 4th Year, No. 47, 25th November

In April 1916, Nicholas II annulled his sister's 15-year marriage to Duke Peter of Oldenburg (1868-1924), allowing her to re-marry. When it became possible to leave Russia in 1920, Olga's mother Dagmar (Empress Marie Feodorovna) summoned her to Hvidore, where Olga for a time acted as her secretary. The couple then bought their farm which they worked to earn a living, supplemented by the sale of Olga's paintings. Olga was a focus of help for Russian emigrés, and also the target of imposters, including Anna Andersen, whom she quickly realized was not her niece. After the war they gave up the farm and took an opportunity to move to Canada, after spending time at Hampton Court with Olga's sister Xenia.
The Germans occupied Denmark on 9th April 1940, the government giving in to save lives. This issue is a remarkable instance of the attempt to continue as normal. Germany was still to declare war on the United States, 16 days later on 11th December 1941.
