LOUISE (Marie Thérèse, 1819-1864, daughter of Charles Ferdinand, Duc de Berry, and wife, 1845, of Carlo III, 1823-1854 (assassinated), from 1849 Duke of Parma & Piacenza)

Signature 'Louise de Bourbon' as Hereditary Princess of Parma, in French, on 4to paper with the conjoined arms of Parma and Bourbon in colour, Hopetoun House (the Marquess of Queensberry's), 9th December a few very light creases without loss

In 1815, on Napoleon's exile, Parma was given to Empress Marie Louise as provision for her life. The heir to the Duchy became known as the Duke of Lucca, and in 1845 became Louise's father-in-law. When Marie Louise died in December 1847, he became Carlo II of Parma, but left the country in April 1848 during the general upheavals of that year. The present signature dates from this period. Finally in March 1849 Carlo II abdicated in favour of Louise's husband, who returned and took up the government in August that year. Their descendants include the royal families of Luxembourg and Bulgaria.
