THORNDIKE (Dame Sybil, 1882-1976, Actress)

Pair of Autograph Letters Signed to Carl HENTSCHEL, (1864-1930, editor of the London Playgoer), saying "How nice of you - the O.P. Club to want me to come to their 21st Birthday party ... I am most honoured. Tell me, please, will it mean a speech?! ... its sad the way having to say a few words ruins all the enjoyment!!" but thanking him "for all the kind things you say" (5th October), "I've done such a foolish thing - my husband can't come ... I must have clean forgotten it was the Gallery First Nighter Debate & he is opening the argument ... he promised them ages ago. Mind you tell me if I have any words to say, I do pray not !! ..." (14th October), Little Theatre, 5th - 14th October no year but the second letter a trifle worn without loss

Carl Hentschel founded the O.P. Club in 1900, an offshoot of the Playgoers' Club of which he was joint founder in 1883. He lived in Chancery Lane to be within walking distance of theatres, and rarely missed a first night.
